A Morning in Brooklyn . . .

When Caitlin told me she was coming to New York City for a quick weekend trip my first thought was I have to take her to do a little Sunday morning ‘fleaing’. The Brooklyn Flea, located along the Williamsburg waterfront has been coined “one of the great urban experiences in New York City” by the New York Times. Its small and quaint (just about a block long), an easy trip on the L train from the city and who can resist that view? Open ‘rain or shine,’ or even in 90 degree heat, it makes for one hot shopping trip, but good initiation for this San Francisco gal.

Working with local entrepreneurs and businesses, the Brooklyn Flea was founded just four years ago by Jonathan Butler of the popular Brownstoner and partner Eric Dumby. Featuring more than 100 vendors with a selection of vintage lighting, prints, jewelry, and salvaged furniture, you are sure to go home with something unique.

Our first find was this 1965 dress form, perfect just as is, then followed were these vintage painted glasses, a great way to liven up any cocktail set for only $1 each, or how about a vintage t-shirt to add to your rock band collection (forget ebay, these were only $15!). But our favorite find this morning had to be the old drafting table complete with pencil marks, rust and all!

Getting hungry yet? The Flea recently debuted Smorgasburg food celebrating local organizations such as Just Food, and the Brooklyn Food Coalition. Try one of these blood orange with candied orange slices on top, almost too pretty to eat, or how about a fancy pickle, or stick with a ice cold ginger lemonade, perfectly simple for a hot day.

happy holiday weekend!

Can you believe it's already July? I certainly can't. Summer, if you can hear me, "please stop going by so fast. I'd like to enjoy every single day." This weekend we will be staying in the city enjoying the calm while everyone else retreats to warmer locations a few hours away. I'm excited for my mom to be in town (Alameda flea market - watch out!), getting into restaurants that are usually packed, taking a day trip to Marin and of course spending Fourth of July at a baseball game with family - it couldn't get more perfect than that. What are all of you doing this long holiday weekend?

a trip to the flea market . . .

Waking up at the crack of dawn one Sunday a month is well worth it when your destination is the Alameda Flea Market. This past weekend I had the pleasure of going with my aunt, friend Nicole and my cousin who is studying photography. Claire documented our journey as we winded through each and every aisle looking for treasures.

I thought that it was about time for me to tell you about a few of my favorite booths. When I first walk into the market I immediately go Grenouille Antiques to say hello to longtime friends Fred and Coco - they've known me since I was a baby. Once I'm done going gaga over their French treasures I head over to Cottage Girls where they have lots of smalls - perfect for styling. After that it's all about walking the aisles looking for items that catch your eye.

Then I finally arrive to Atelier de Campagne - where I'm greeted by Trinidad Castro and Johan de Meulenaere. Buyers beware, it's easy to spend every last penny of your cash here. It's filled with wonderful treasures that make my heart skip a beat. Luckily, they have a store you can visit all the time in case you need a little pick me up between markets.

And then you finally stumble upon the lovely Tinsel Trading. For the love of ribbon, it's a dream come turn! Bursting with so much goodness that you'll instantly get inspired by all of the patterns and colors.
